Black screen when/after installing graphics card driver [Fix]

In this article, we have listed a few troubleshooting steps to help you resolve the black screen after installing the graphics card driver problem Windows 10.

How do I fix the black screen when installing graphics card driver?

1. Uninstall and Reinstall GPU driver 

  1. Launch Revo Uninstaller. If you don’t have it installed already, download it from the official site below.
  2. Once installed, launch the app and wait for it to load all the apps installed on your computer.
  3. Locate and choose the Nvidia GPU driver from the list. If you are using an AMD GPU, choose an appropriate driver instead.
  4. Right-click on the GPU driver and choose Uninstall.

  5. Check the Make a System Restore Point before uninstall option and then click Continue. Revo Uninstaller will create a restore point first.
  6. Choose the Moderate mode option and click the Scan button.
  7. Click the Select All button and then click on Delete.
  8. Again click on Select All and then Delete.
  9. Go back to uninstaller and repeat the steps to uninstall all the drivers and software associated with the GPU.

Once you have uninstalled the GPU driver, reboot the computer and check if the black screen issue is resolved. 

Next, open your GPU manufacturer website and download the latest version of the GPU driver. For Nvidia GPU, download and install Nvidia GeForce Experience to install the required drivers.

If the black screen after installing the graphics card driver Windows 10 issue occurs again, reinstall the drivers in Safe Mode.

2. Uninstall and download the GPU driver

Before you install your GPU driver in Safe Mode, make sure to uninstall the GPU driver and other related software. Next, download the latest version of the GPU driver.

Reinstall GPU driver in Safe Mode 

  1. Press the Windows key + I to open Settings
  2. Choose Update & Security.
  3. Click on the Recovery tab from the left pane.
  4. Scroll down to the Advanced Startup section and click the Restart Now button.

  5. In the Choose an Option window, click the Troubleshoot button.
  6. Next, click on the Advanced options.
  7. In the Advanced Options windows, click Start-up Settings.
  8. Click the Start button.
  9. Windows will restart and show multiple boot options.
  10. Press the 4/F4 key on your keyboard to choose the Enable Safe Mode option.
  11. Windows will restart in Safe Mode with minimal services and programs running.

Once in the Safe Mode, uninstall the GPU driver, if not already uninstalled. Next, run the GPU driver installer and proceed with the installation. Once installed, reboot the computer, and it should start normally.

Third-party software conflict can trigger the black screen after installing AMD graphics drivers issue. In Safe Mode, Windows starts with minimal service and without third-party apps interference.


3. Adjust CPU voltage / Update BIOS / Reinstall older BIOS version

If you have updated your Motherboard BIOS recently, check if the update has changed the default CPU voltage. Underpowered CPUs can cause the black screen while installing graphics card driver issues.
